These flowers are also occasionally called prairie and tulip gentian; however, they are not to be confused with the proper gentian, which is a separate and far larger – genus. These plants are herbaceous annuals that are slow growing, and tend to blossom their best in rich, moist soil.

Lisianthus - They are native to areas of northern South America,
Mexico, and the Caribbean; however, they are best known for their growth
in the prairies of North America. Despite the small variety of natural
growing species, their many cultivars give this flower a multitude of
looks. For instance, the double-headed type of this blossom is similar
in appearance to a peony or rose; while a single head may resemble a
poppy or tulip. In addition to their many styles, lisianthus flowers
come in several colors – from varying shades of white and pink, all the
way to rich shades of blue and purple.
